Discrimination legislation protecting the rights of people to equality and freedom are enshrined in both State and Federal Acts of Parliament. For example, the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic) protects people from discrimination based on sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital status, age, race, disability etc. Complaints can be resolved pursuant to confidential dispute resolution services or by application to VCAT where compensation can be awarded for any injury or damage suffered because of the contravention.
